Students participates in National Walk to School Day

It was a healthy start to the day for dozens of students at East Columbus Elementary School. This morning, they joined schools across the country to celebrate the benefits and fun of walking to school on this “National Walk and Bike to School Day.”

Students took part by walking or biking with members of the Columbus Police Department and Columbus Public Health. Their goal? To teach kids about safety and good health, both physically and mentally.

“There are a lot of academic benefits, like more concentration in school. They kind of get the wiggles out before they sit down for a day of learning,” said Katherine Swidarski of Columbus Public Health.

The energy from Walk to School Day can inspire lasting change for communities by encouraging city leaders to commit to creating safe environments for youth to walk and bicycle.

Columbus Recreation and Parks also took part in this national walking event.
